Abstract:Pyrophosphate arthropathy is a clinical syndrome that is recognized as a consequence of calcification of aging tissues. This syndrome, with emphasis on its presentation in the knees of elderly persons, is reviewed. Comments on the epidemiology, clinical presentation with criteria of diagnosis, radiology, synovial fluid findings, differential diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment are offered.
