Pyrolysis of wood at high temperature: The influence of experimental parameters on gaseous products

Abstract: The pyrolysis of wood was carried out in an Entrained Flow Reactor at high temperature (650 to 950°C) and under rapid heating conditions (N 10 3 K s − 1 ). The influence of the diameter and initial moisture of the particle, reactor temperature, residence time and the nature of the gaseous atmosphere on the composition of the gaseous products has been characterised. Particle size, between 80-125 and 160-200 μm, did not show any impact. Pyrolysis and tar cracking essentially happen in very short time period: les… Show more

“…The primary pyrolysis took place at the temperature of 200-600 °C and occured when the biomass decomposes into the primary char (Basu, 2010a). Dufour et al (2008) stated that CH 4 increased up to 70% at 1000 °C and the tar decreased but gases increased at temperatures between 800-1000 0 C (Commandré, Lahmidi, Salvador, & Dupassieux, 2011). Smaller char reacted to oxygen more easily in combustion and gasification.…”

“…products can vary depending on the pyrolysis conditions, for instance reported char yields range from 7 to 50% [50,9]. The three main factors influencing pyrolysis products distribution are: the pyrolysis final temperature and heating rate and biomass initial composition [51,52,27,[53][54][55]26,56].…”

“…The higher char yield was also observed in low temperature in their experiments. Commandré et al [44] carried out the pyrolysis process of the pine wood at different temperature ranges using nitrogen as a carrier gas. They have also figured out that hydrogen production has significantly increased by increasing temperature that also supports the present study of pyrolysis of biomass.…”
