A three dimensional finite element of nonlinear pushover analysis for short span Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridge with circular piers cross section is modeling to present effects of soil structural interaction (SSI). Structural elements models are including linear foundation springs modeling, and nonlinear RC piers modeling. The paper succeeded to present the SSI effects of nonlinear pushover analysis of short spans RC bridges to determine the significant effects on dynamic characteristics and displacement capacity of short span RC bridges performance; that is increasing within range 11% to 20% compared to baseline pushover analysis of bridge without SSI effects. Results show the bridge stiffness decreases due to SSI effects on the bridge support for more flexible soils types that generates large displacement, with corresponding less base shear in bridge piers and footings by average percentage 12% and 18%, which is important for structural evaluation for new bridge construction and also, for strengthening and repair works evaluation of existing bridges.

This paper presents the results of the seismic evaluation of an elevated seven-span bridge with tall piers in western Pennsylvania. The bridge was modeled using the SEISAB software, and the analysis used modal superposition method. Various modeling strategies related to piers, abutments, expansion joints, fixed joints, rocker bearings, and hanger supports were studied. Several modeling options were made to capture different behavior responses under seismic loading conditions. The force and displacement demands are compared, and an assessment is made with respect to the potential for damage based on the analysis results. The result of the study shows that for the level of earthquakes expected in the region, columns will not be overstressed. Furthermore, the analysis results show that displacements of the superstructure should not be of concern in light of the fact that there is sufficient bearing seat width and that concrete pedestals have been added in front of the bearing supports to presumably prevent the walking off of the bearing from the support. The study concludes that considering the low level of earthquakes expected in PA, the potential for collapse of the superstructure due to bearing support failure is negligible. The paper contributes to better understanding of the behavior of tall and elevated highway bridges in low seismic regions. The results of the study reinforce the view that decisions on seismic retrofit of such bridges in low seismic regions should not be based on column tie spacing.

Bridge washouts connected to flood events are deemed one of the main reasons for structural collapse. Compared to traditional continuous jointed bridges, integral abutment and jointless bridges (IAJBs) have better lateral stability because there are no expansion devices. The mechanical performance of Shangban IAJ bridge, located in Fujian, China, is thoroughly investigated by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The numerical model is created and validated based on experimental results obtained from static load tests performed on the bridge. A detailed parametric analysis is carried out to assess the correlation between the flood-resistant performance and a number of parameters: skew angle, water-blocking area, span number, pile section geometry, and abutment height. Except for the abutment height, other parameters significantly affect the bridge performance. Furthermore, the change in the span number has a meaningful impact only when fewer than four spans are modeled. Finally, pushover analyses estimate the maximum transverse displacement and the sequence of plastic hinge creation as well as the mechanical behaviour of the structure under lateral flood loads. The analysis results show that IAJBs have better flooding-resistant performance than conventional jointed bridges.
