This essay discusses the semiotic scaffolding of modern science, the roots of which lie in the Protestant Reformation and the latter's repudiation of the "semiotics of nature" upon which medieval theology depended. Taking the fourteenth-century battles between realism and nominalism as the semiotic scaffolding of the Reformation which was subsequently built on nominalist principles, and the Reformation as what made possible the development of early modern science, this essay argues that nominalism, Protestantism, and early modern science were all infected by the gnostic influences which had always accompanied Christianity from the start. Indicating that forms of creative discovery, in the arts, humanities and sciences, are closer to poetic forms than they are to the Baconian model which informed modern science, the essay goes on to link the latter gnostic-influenced metaphysics, motivated by a Reformation anxiety about sin and error, to the development of the modern "megamachine" as described by Lewis Mumford in The Myth of the Machine volumes 1 and 2. Finally the essay suggests that semiotically revivified life sciences might be capable of resolving some of the systemic and ecological problems which Mumford identifies.

Science in the modern sense has its origins in early modernity, while the concept of Lebenswelt comes to us from the late modern development of Husserlian phenomenology. Umwelt, by contrast, comes principally from the work of Jakob von Uexküll. Semiotics, by contrast both with science and with phenomenology, is a postmodern development -indeed, as far as philosophy is concerned, semiotics is the very heart of the postmodern turn of intellectual culture. My thesis is that the concept of "environment" most properly pertains to the understanding of science, "Umwelt" best suits phenomenology, while "Lebenswelt" requires a semiotic interpretation to achieve its richest potential.

The aim of the present paper shall be to analyze determined semantic taxonomies of the main characters in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". The focus shall be on rendering characters' actions passionate, due to a semiotics of action, as described in Greimas and Fontanille (1993). To my opinion, universal themes such as love, hatred, death, etc. can be subject to a passionate configuration of different characters perspective in action. This shall also be due to the recent definition of semiotics as a cognitive science on meaning interpretation. In conclusion, characters' passions resulting as final semantic entities shall give this study an empirical account for at least two reasons: first to argument semiotics' importance of artistic expressivity and second, to argument semiotics' epistemological significance besides its ontological one. "The signs' way" as Deely (2009) states, gives us the possibility of treating each character's perspective separately, thus rendering the signification process for each sign taken as an example separately.
