This work aims to synthesize novel thermoresponsive hydrogels from renewable resources, bacterial cellulose (BC), and castor oil (CO), and to investigate the effect of CO on physical and thermal behaviors of BC/Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels. The structural properties of the hydrogels are analyzed by Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) technique and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) are also performed to examine the thermal properties of the hydrogels. The morphological differences of the hydrogels are analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The thermoresponsive performances of the hydrogels are examined by swelling and deswelling behaviors. The hydrogel with CO is found to be more sensitive to temperature changes than the one without CO. Deswelling study demonstrates 91 and 25% of water loss for hydrogels with and without CO, respectively. The present study shows a novel approach to synthesize thermoresponsive hydrogels with renewable resources for biomedical applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Calix[4]arene-polyurethane (C4PU) polymer was used as an alternative adsorbent for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) dyes, from the aqueous solution. C4PU was synthesised by reacting p-tert-butyl calix[4]arene with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) as the cross-linking agent. A preliminary study was carried out to determine the best ratio of calix[4arene and HMDI in the adsorption of dyes and C4PU-4 shows a better adsorption compared to the synthesized C4PU in other ratios. The polymer was characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and point of zero charge (pHPZC). The isotherms and kinetics of the adsorption of MB and MG were studied under a range of experimental conditions, including pH, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, and contact time. The adsorption was determined by the adsorption percentage of MB and MG dyes from the solution. The adsorption process for both dyes is best described by the Langmuir isotherm model, and it follows the pseudo-second order kinetic model, with the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of MB and MG, respectively, was found to be 1.619 mg.g− 1 and 2.192 mg.g− 1.

This paper describes the first aerial additive building manufacturing system developed to create and repair civil engineering structures remotely using polymers extruded from unmanned aerial robots (drones). The structural potential of three commercially available expanding polyurethane foams of varying density (LD40, Reprocell 300 and Reprocell 500), and their feasibility for deposition using an autonomous flying dual-syringe device is described. Test specimens consisting of one and two layers, with horizontal and vertical interfaces, were mechanically tested both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of expansion. LD40 specimens exhibited ductile failure in flexural tests and provided evidence that the interfaces between layers were not necessarily regions of weaknesses. Hand-mixed specimens of Reprocell 500 possessed compressive strengths comparable to those of concrete and flexural strengths similar to those of the lower range of timber, though they exhibited brittle failure. There are challenges to be faced with matching the performance of hand-mixed specimens using an autonomous dual-syringe deposition device, primarily concerning the rheological properties of the material following extrusion. However, the device successfully imported and deposited two liquid components, of varying viscosity, and maintained correct mixing ratios. This work has demonstrated the structural and operational feasibility of polyurethane foam as a viable structural material for remote three-dimensional printing using drones.
