Pulsed electromagnetic field treatment enhances healing callus biomechanical properties in an animal model of osteoporotic fracture

Abstract: Delayed bone healing has been noted in osteoporosis patients and in the ovariectomized (OVX) rat model of estrogen-depletion osteopenia. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) devices are clinically approved as an adjunct to cervical fusion surgery in patients at high risk for non-fusion and for the treatment of fracture non-unions. These bone growth stimulating devices also accelerate the healing of fresh fracture repair in skeletally mature normal rats but have not been tested for efficacy to accelerate and/or … Show more

“…The free radicals can damage DNA and develop harmful cellular responses (6,10). Several studies showed that EMFs could be applied as an antibacterial agent and also utilize as a nonchemical agent for healing or injuring the cells (11)(12)(13).…”

“…Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) have been proven to present satisfying therapeutic effects on OP experimentally and clinically 9, 12, 37, 38 . However, the potential mechanism responsible for the effects of PEMF on preservation of bone mass are not well understood.…”

“…An alternative therapy which is worthy of consideration in the treatment of OP is EMF, which has been investigated as a noninvasive alternative method 8–11 . It has been reported that EMF can increase bone mineral density (BMD) in OP patients 12 , prevent bone loss in OVX induced OP in vivo 9, 13 , and affect bone metabolism in vitro 14 . However, the efficacy of this modality remains uncertain currently 15, 16 .…”

“…Since that time, several studies have been conducted with PEMF with differing results, 49,50 but all favorable to the effect of PEMF. In animal models, increased mineral bone density, 51 increased bone stiffness, 22,52 and more rapid incorporation of bone grafts were observed with the use of PEMF, but no significant improvement was found in the final consolidation rate. 21,23 In a prospective, double-blind, randomized clinical study, Mooney 50 observed a bone consolidation rate of 92% in interbody lumbar arthrodesis surgeries with the use of PEMF versus 65% in the control group.…”
