Pulsed corona discharge for oxidation of gaseous elemental mercury

Abstract: Positive pulsed corona discharge has been applied for the oxidation of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) from a simulated flue gas. The oxidation of Hg0 to HgO and HgCl2 can significantly enhance the mercury removal from flue gas. At a gas condition of O2 (10%), H2O (3%), and N2 (balance), Hg0 oxidation efficiency of 84% was achieved at an input energy density of 45J∕l. The presence of NO, however, hinders Hg0 oxidation due to the preferential reaction of NO with O and O3. On the contrary, SO2 shows little effec… Show more

“…The reaction rate coefficient of NO with O 3 (1.8 9 10 -14 cm 3 molecules -1 s -1 ) (Reaction 13) [29] is much faster than that of (10.5 ± 0.65) 9 10 -19 cm 3 molecules -1 s -1 [30] for Hg 0 reacting with O 3 , implying that the O 3 can rapidly react with NO. Therefore, O 3 will be preferentially exhausted, Hg 0 oxidation efficiency markedly reduced, being in agreement with the results obtained in previous studies [31][32][33]. The concentration of SO 2 was varied to study effect of SO 2 on the Hg 0 oxidation (Fig.…”

“…The reason can be explained from the difference of the possible reaction mechanisms between SO 2 and active species (ÁOH, ÁO and O 3 ). As indicated in the previous research [28,33], most SO 2 is oxidized to HSO 3 and SO 3 by ÁOH and ÁO radicals which are the main radical species for oxidation due to the large rate constant compared with the other radical species such as O 3 . Therefore, the consumption of O 3 , and total Hg concentrations was shown in Fig.…”

“…A continuous increase in input energy increases electrical energy cost. These findings are consistent with results reported in plasma systems using corona discharge and single dielectric barrier discharge (Chen et al, 2006;Jeong and Jurng, 2007;Ko et al, 2008;Wang et al, 2010). Furthermore, these findings show that pre-existing NaCl particles improve Hg 0 removal efficiency.…”

“…The application of non-thermal plasma technology for mercury removal has been mainly studied with corona discharge (Ko et al, 2008;Byun et al, 2011b) and dielectric barrier discharge system (Chen et al, 2006;Jeong and Jurng, 2007;Byun et al, 2011a). Both kinds of plasma treatment systems employed one naked metal electrode (commonly as the high voltage electrode), which can partially heat the flue gas, resulting in the unnecessary consumption of electrical energy.…”

“…Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), a type of AC corona discharge, has been well studied as a Hg 0 oxidation technique (Chen et al, 2006;Jeong and Jurng, 2007;Byun et al, 2008Byun et al, , 2011aByun et al, , 2011bKo et al, 2008c;Lin et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2010;Jiang et al, 2012). Similarly, DC corona discharge (Liang et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2009Wang et al, , 2011aWang et al, , 2013a and pulsed corona discharge (Liang et al, 1998;Ko et al, 2008aKo et al, , 2008bXu et al, 2009) have also been used to oxidize Hg 0 . Notably, corona discharge has additional beneficial effects other than Hg 0 oxidation.…”
