“…In contrast, our data clearly revealed no advantage in the group of patients with long-term AA plurifocalis compared to patients with their first episode of the disease regarding therapy response. Nevertheless, as reported previously by Friedli et al [17], we also observed no effects of corticosteroid pulse therapy in patients with ophiasic AA, AA totalis and AA universalis. In patients with plurifocal AA, however, we observed long-lasting responses with more than 50% regrowth of hair in 10 of 18 patients.…”

“…In 1996, Sharma [16]published a study demonstrating hair regrowth in 14 of 24 patients (58%) treated with monthly administrations of high-dose oral corticosteroids. Among other publications a more recent study by Friedli et al [17]including 45 patients also demonstrated that single doses of intravenous methylprednisolone are effective and well tolerated in patients with rapidly progressing extensive plurifocal AA, but not in patients with ophiasic and universal AA [17, 18, 19, 20]. …”

“…Complete regrowth occurred in 5 patients at the 12-month follow-up. Friedli et al 24 administered 250 mg intravenous methyl prednisolone twice daily on three successive days in 45 patients with rapid and extensive hair loss for less than a year. Patients with multifocal AA showed the best response rate, with 9 (45%), 12 (60%), 13 (65%) and 12 (60%) showing 100% or 50% to 100% regrowth at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, respectively.…”
