“…Subpleural curvilinear bands have subsequently been described in association with micro-atelectasis in patients with atrial septal defect24 or respiratory muscle weakness25 and as reversible sign caused by interstitial oedema resulting from pulmonary congestion 26. Observations in subjects without lung disease and undergoing lymphography have led to the suggestion that the sign may represent an engorged subpleural lymphatic network 27. Given the presence of a high-output state in SCD, and the correlation of subpleural curvilinear lines with markers of small-vessel dilatation observed in our cohort, it is tempting to speculate that this pattern may be related to interstitial oedema and/or increased lymphatic drainage.…”

“…The subpleural attenuating curvilinear line defining the subpleural line may be in some but not all healthy individuals a reversible phenomenon, disappearing at imaging in prone position. This finding has been related to focal atelectasis due to labile engorgement of a leash of subpleural lymphatic vessels, which is more prominent in the dorsal part of the lung bases 17. In the CT lung cancer screening study by Vehmas et al 18 among asbestos-exposed workers, by adjusting the analysis for smoking status, asbestos exposure and body mass index, increasing age correlated positively with interstitial abnormalities on HRCT findings 18.…”

“…53 In asbestosis, these lines appear to represent areas of peribronchiolar fibrosis in adjacent pulmonary lobules. Pilate and associates 54 noted that the subpleural curvilinear line may correspond to a subpleural lymphatic network, which may 339 Figure 9. Early asbestosis.…”
