Pull‐through technique for vertical canal ablation for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs and cats

Abstract: An alternative technique to ablate the vertical segment of the external auditory meatus, applicable to dogs and cats, is described. The results of this surgery in 11 dogs and one cat are compared with those in seven dogs using the traditional ablation procedure.

“…Chronic aural disease in cats, characterised by scratching, headshaking and otorrhoea, is rarely the result of chronic hyperplastic change to the integument of the ear canal, commonly seen in the dog (Lane 1985). The results of this series are consistent with the impressions of Lane (1985) and Tirgari and Pinniger (1986) that neoplastic change within the external auditory meatus (EAM) is the commonest cause of chronic otitis in the cat.…”

“…This was not found to be the case in this series of referred cases, though it was the commonest cause in the younger age group of cats. The surgical management previously described for aural tumours has included lateral wall resection (Legendre and Krahwinkell980, Lane 1982), vertical canal ablation (Lane 1982, Tirgari and Pinniger 1986), total canal ablation (Hitt 1980) and ventral bulla osteotomy (Alder and Boothe 1979). Neither of the two former procedures address themselves to masses emanating from the horizontal canal.…”
