Publication Trends for Alzheimer's Disease Worldwide and in China: A 30-Year Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract: Background: Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, has tremendous social and economic impact worldwide. This study aimed to analyze global trends in Alzheimer's disease research and to investigate China's contribution to this research. Methods: The quantity and influence of publications related to Alzheimer's disease in China and elsewhere were compared. The Web of Science (WOS) and PubMed databases were searched from 1988 to 2017 using the terms “Alzheimer's … Show more

“…Several studies are ongoing to understand further the underlying mechanism of the disease that would assist in developing more effective therapeutic agents that may improve the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The principal goals of Alzheimer's research are to determine when and how interventions can slow or stop cognitive decline in patients and identify early signs of decline and treatment response (Dong et al, 2019 ). However, more budget from these countries on the subject is highly imperative to allow more treatments to be carried out in clinical trials.…”

“…Amongst the top 10 types of pain, the most popular study type was neuropathic pain with the most publications (860), citations (32,515), and the highest H-index value (87). According to the keywords with the strongest citation bursts, our results found that the top 61 keywords since 1981 were as follows: “gene related peptide”, “rat spinal cord”, “substance p”, and “tumor necrosis factor.” Large clusters in keyword cooccurrence networks imply substantial research hotspots [ 46 ]. In the past 40 years, as the research covering comorbid pain and inflammation was gradually converted from phenomenon to mechanism, we were optimistic that more effective treatments will be developed in the predictable future.…”

“…Remarkably, around half (46.4%) of all medical error publications were affiliated with the United States (being also the home country of Professor Bates), where 8 out of the top 10 most productive institutions were located ( Table 1 ). While the United States is clearly one of the leading countries in terms of scientific productivity in many different research areas, its publication share (46.4%) in the medical errors literature is clearly higher than the shares of publications affiliated with the United States in other scientific areas with medical relevance such as Alzheimer disease (39.4%) ( 20 ), bariatric surgery (39.3%) ( 21 ), and neuropharmacology (38.0%) ( 14 ).…”
