Publication Times in Ophthalmology Journals: The Story of Accepted Manuscripts

Abstract: Introduction: The process of scientific publishing changed greatly in the past decades. The authors aimed to get insight into the time required for articles to be accepted and released online in high-impacted ophthalmology journals. Methods: Comprehensive review of all original articles published by eight ophthalmology journals during a one-year period was performed for 2020 and 2005. Time taken from submission to acceptance and the first online release of the article was abstracted and analyzed. Results: A tota… Show more

“…In the present study, individual median peer-review time for dentistry journals varied widely, with an overall peer-review time of 115 days. In top plastic surgery journals in 2020, the median time from submission to acceptance was 5.4 months (approximately 162 days), and in ophthalmology journals was 119 days, which is comparable to dentistry journals [1,13]. Significant time delay in the publication process could influence the reporting of significant clinical findings [2].…”

“…However, the median time from manuscript submission to acceptance in eight ophthalmology journals in 2020 was 119 days, and most commonly manuscript submissions require going through multiple journals before finally publishing. 14 As such, many of these projects likely required rounds of revisions and resubmissions that occurred during residency and still represent residency scholarly activity. Residents taking at least one gap year had similar odds for having at least one first author publication and at least two first author publications than those not taking a gap year.…”

“…Per unit increase in impact factor, there is a 19.1% increase in acceptance delay and a 15.8% decrease in publication delay in orthopedic surgery (Charen et al, 2020 ). Moreover, the increasing pressure to publish journal articles with high impact factor significantly influences the publication time in ophthalmology journals (Skrzypczak et al, 2021 ). Interestingly, scientific publications by board members have shorter publication delays than those by non–board members (Xu et al, 2021 ).…”
