Publication cultures and the citation impact of open access

Abstract: Does open access (OA) to journal articles foster citations to these articles? We compare the citation impact of gold and green OA in two disciplines: Biology and Economics & Management. The empirical analysis covers all articles of these disciplines included in the Web of Science "Journal Citation Reports" between 2000 and 2019.We show that, controlling for confounding variables pertaining to the journals and articles, gold OA increases citations across all articles. However, the individual disciplines feature… Show more

“…Citations, in turn, are a function of journal reputation (so there is a clear endogeneity issue), but also of other factors. In particular, several studies have found that OA positively affects citations in various ways even though the findings are not unambiguous (see, e.g., Antelman, 2004; Atchison & Bull, 2015; Eger et al, 2021; Eysenbach, 2006; McCabe & Snyder, 2014, 2015,2021; Mueller‐Langer & Watt, 2010). For the authors, publications outlets are substitutes to some degree.…”

“…Understanding the barriers faced by authors in the publication process is essential. There have been a number of surveys examining open science broadly [ [29] , [30] , [31] , [32] , [33] ], open access publishing [ [34] , [35] , [36] ], data sharing [ [37] , [38] , [39] , [40] ], open peer review [ 41 ], open source [ 42 ], and the role of open science in research assessment [ 43 , 44 ]. These studies point to the methodological feasibility of a survey on open science and the likelihood of a satisfactory response rate.…”
