Pubertal Timing and Youth Internalizing Psychopathology: The Role of Relational Aggression

Abstract: The current study examined relational aggression as a potential mechanism that explains the association between off-time pubertal development and internalizing problems in youth. Youth gender was also examined as a moderator for the association between these variables. It was hypothesized that early pubertal maturation would be associated with higher levels of relationally aggressive behavior which, in turn, would be associated with elevated levels of internalizing problems. “…The developmental readiness hypothesis posits that entering puberty earlier than one's peers may add psychological stress due to asynchrony among biological, social, and emotional developments [6]. Early pubertal timing is related to many externalizing behavior problems such as relational aggression, conduct problems, substance use, and smoking behaviors [7][8][9].…”

“…Because CPP is a rare disease, the number of published studies examining CPP is limited and most studies have small sample sizes 7,9,[28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] . However, a longitudinal study performed by Mensah et al 35 examined psychosocial adjustment in a large sample of Australian children using PedsQL.…”

“…As youth enter adolescence, the rate of aggressive behavior at school is seemingly booming. This is because the biological changes within the onset of puberty are troubling or disturbing to adolescents, which may intensify aggressive behavior in such a period (Tremblay, 1998;Pomerantz et al, 2017). Embedded in Confucianism, Chinese culture pays special attention to maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships and family dignity (Bond, 2010), which has a significant influence on the development of personality, social skills, and social behavior.…”
