Pubertal exposure to anabolic androgenic steroids increases spine densities on neurons in the limbic system of male rats

Abstract: Human studies show that the number of teenagers abusing anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is increasing. During adolescence, brain development is altered by androgen exposure, which suggests that AAS may potentially alter central nervous system development. The goal of the present study was to determine whether pubertal AAS exposure increased dendritic spine densities on neurons within the medial amygdala and the dorsal hippocampus. Pubertal gonadally intact male rats received the AAS testosterone propionate … Show more

“…Both androgens [202][203][204] and estrogens [205][206][207] increase CA1 apical dendritic spine density, alter spine shape and functional plasticity [267]. CA1 spine density naturally fluctuates across the female estrous cycle with CA1 spine density greatest at proestrus [173,208], an effect that can be produced in OVX females injected with estradiol [207,209,210] or implanted with silastic capsules filled with estradiol [173,211] or even cholesterol [173].…”

“…A maioria dos trabalhos publicados está associada aos prejudiciais efeitos colaterais psicogênicos a superdosagens de anabólicos esteroides incluindo comportamento agressivo e violento e dependência química que os EAA provocam. Nos usuários de tais substâncias também são decorrentes os transtornos psiquiátricos 25,26 . sugerir que o efeito no cerebelo depende principalmente da dose utilizada, droga e tempo de exposição da mesma a que corrobora com os dados obtidos neste presente estudo 14 .…”

“…It is relatively easy and fast (5-11 days), requires minimal equipments, and provides good results for human brain tissue fixed in formalin. Qualitative and quantitative studies can be conducted in well-impregnated neurons under light microscopy (see examples in Rasia-Filho et al, 2004;de Castilhos et al, 2006de Castilhos et al, , 2008Brusco et al, 2008;Dall'Oglio et al, 2008a,b) to be correlated with other neuronal and glial morphological and functional findings Martinez et al, 2006;Cunningham et al, 2007;de Castilhos et al, 2008;Rasia-Filho et al, 2009). Therefore, besides other current techniques and innovations, the Golgi method continues to be a relevant tool to neuroscience.…”
