“…Interestingly, BP estimates are very close to those achieved by Kangawa (Kangawa et al., 2016) in microminipigs (18 weeks). These numbers are outdated by some minipigs strains, like Gottingen (8 weeks) (Tab erner et al., 2016) or Naga (Karunakaran et al., 2009), and Asian highly prolific breeds, like Meishan (8 to 12 weeks) (Lunstra et al., 1997; White et al., 1993). It also confirms some subjective reports from farmers and breeding records from the Breeders association (Paixão et al., 2019).…”

“…This marked difference, which is very important in terms of selection of animals for studies and interpretation of experimental results, may be linked with how maturity was defined in the 2 studies but alternatively could be due to intrinsic interstrain differences or to husbandry differences. The authors of this review suggest that it may be useful for a panel of pathologists to reexamine the sections reported by Evans et al (2012) and Taberner et al (2015) simultaneously in order to ensure that consistent histological criteria have been applied. It would also be useful in future work to correlate the histological appearances of the maturing testis and epididymides with those of the prostate and seminal vesicles.…”

“…As with the NHP, there is high inter‐animal and high strain variability in timing of maturation. Gottingen minipigs at 4 months of age can be prepubertal to adult (Bode et al, ), and Gottingen pigs may have onset of puberty as early as 2 months of age (Evans et al, ), or as early as 6 to 7 weeks of age (Taberner et al, ). Gottingen pigs generally have onset of puberty approximately 2 months earlier than their Yucatan counterparts, and Yucatans reach onset of puberty at approximately 3.6 to 4.0 months of age (Evans et al, ).…”

“…For example, some authors report the day of mating as gestation day (GD) 0 or 1 or consider the day of birth to be postnatal day (PND) 0 or 1, depending on the time of day that parturition is either initiated or completed. While referring to developmental milestones, “sexual maturity” has been used by some authors to indicate onset of puberty, puberty, or early adult stages (Evans et al, ; Howroyd et al, ; Taberner et al, ).…”
