“…This decoration effect occurs at lower temperatures for Metal/TiO 2 systems, and Datye, et al have postulated that the SMSI effect is different for Metal/TiO 2 and Metal/CeO 2 systems [7]. Using HRTEM they observed that Pt clusters grew in an epitaxial relation on CeO 2 , whereas reduced TiO 2 particles migrated onto Pt clusters when catalysts were reduced at 773 K. This result has been confirmed by Abid, et al who also observed that Pt particles 3-4 nm in size grew in an epitaxial pattern on ceria after reduction at 773 K [14]. Thus, it is possible that CeO x is able to modify the geometric properties of Pt [14].…”

“…Cerium-based platinum catalysts have been extensively studied for the hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde (CH 3 ÀCH=CHÀ CHO) [108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118] and citral ((CH 3 ) 2 C=CHÀ(CH 2 ) 2 ÀC(CH 3 )=CH-CHO). [119,120] The activation of the carbonyl bond is induced by the presence of oxygen vacancies sites located at the interface between ceria and the platinum particles.…”

“…[108][109][110] On chlorine-free Pt/CeO 2 , the crotyl alcohol selectivity increased up to more than 80 % (conversion: 45 %) when the reduction temperature of the catalysts reached 700 8C. The presence of chlorine, during the catalyst synthesis, preserves the catalytic properties of platinum metal www.chemsuschem.org for the hydrogenation of C=C bond; chlorine atoms around platinum particles inhibit the diffusion of cerium atoms inside the metal particles and prevents the formation of CePt 5 alloy.…”

“…In fact, shapedependent activity of ceria has already been recognized in catalytic CO oxidation [11][12][13][14], NO reduction [15], water-gas shift reaction [16,17] and soot combustion [18]. The energy required to form oxygen vacancies on the {1 1 1} surface of CeO 2 is higher than those on {1 1 0} and {1 0 0} surfaces, so the concentration of oxygen vacancies on differents planes of ceria is different [19]. There are more oxygen vacancies on {1 1 0} and {1 0 0} planes, which are favorable for the catalytic reactions outlined above.…”
