Psychrobacter piscatorii sp. nov., a psychrotolerant bacterium exhibiting high catalase activity isolated from an oxidative environment

Abstract: A Gram-negative, non-motile, psychrotolerant bacterium exhibiting high catalase activity, designated strain T-3-2 T , was isolated from a drain of a fish-processing plant. Its catalase activity was 12 000 U (mg protein) "1 , much higher than the activity of the other Psychrobacter strains tested. The strain grew at 0-30 6C and in the presence of 0-12 % NaCl. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8), and C 16 : 1 v9c and C 18 : 1 v9c were the predominant cellular fatty acids. The DNA G+C conten… Show more

“…Three novel species of psychrotolerant H 2 O 2 -resistant bacteria, namely, V . rumoiensis [12]–[17], Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans [18][20] and Psychrobacter piscatorii [21][23], have been isolated and their catalases have been studied. Among these isolates, E. oxidotolerans T-2-2 T is the only Gram-positive bacterium and it exhibits high catalase activity in the extracellular fraction.…”

“…Most of the species described so far have been isolated from cold environments, including Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, water, soils and sediments (Bowman et al, 1996(Bowman et al, , 1997Yumoto et al, 2003;Romanenko et al, 2004;Shivaji et al, 2004;Bakermans et al, 2006). Less frequently, new species have been isolated from temperate marine environments (Yoon et al, 2005b;Yumoto et al, 2010) and other sources such as pigeon feces, food products, lung tissue and human blood (Vela et al, 2003;Yoon et al, 2003Yoon et al, , 2005aYassin & Busse, 2009;Wirth et al, 2012).…”

“…EKTA is a clade 1 catalase. We have isolated the third strain, Psychrobacter piscatorii T-3-2 T , whose cell extract exhibits 12,000 U·mg protein −1 , from the same place where strain T-2-2 T was isolated [21]. In addition to strain T-3-2 T , we have isolated P. piscatorii strain T-3 found to have similar characteristics to strain T-3-2 T , which exhibited a higher activity than strain T-3-2 T .…”
