Psychosocial services in the first 30 days after diagnosis: Results of a web‐based survey of children's oncology group (COG) member institutions

Abstract: While some version of most recommended psychosocial services are offered across COG institutions, evidence-based psychosocial services are offered at only 11% of sites. Advances in psychosocial outcomes in pediatric oncology could be accelerated by multi-site collaboration, use of standardized assessment tools, and evidence-based interventions.

“…[10] However, practical constraints (e.g., cost, time-consuming, labor intensive) make it difficult to integrate NPT into routine clinical care of cancer survivors. [1113] To utilize NPT in a more efficient and effective manner, a user-friendly standardized tool that can facilitate timely referral by identifying children likely developing cognitive decrements is needed. Standardization allows for comparisons of scores over time in a psychometrically sound manner.…”

“…However, a recent survey of 127 Children’s Oncology Group (COG) institutions indicates that evidence-based psychosocial assessments and interventions were used infrequently and/or inconsistently [42]. In 62.5% of these institutions, more than half of the families are offered these services.…”
