Psychosocial problems of children whose parents visit the emergency department due to intimate partner violence, substance abuse or a suicide attempt

Abstract: We found no differences in psychosocial problems between children whose parents visited the emergency department due to partner violence, substance abuse or suicide attempt and children from community samples. Because 35% of the children scored in the range of post-traumatic stress disorder, we advise healthcare providers to pay attention to post-traumatic stress symptoms.

“…In short, the overall response rate of the first assessment was 36–52%, as most of the nonparticipation was not due to the refusal of the families but to logistical reasons. Overall, we suspect that there may have been some underestimation of reported psychosocial problems . At the one‐year follow‐up, we were not able to reach half of the families lost to follow‐up because telephone numbers and home addresses changed often and the other half of the families refused to participate, mainly because they did not want to be reminded of the emergency visit again.…”

“…During the first assessment, the children who took part did not experience more psychosocial problems than community samples , but we hypothesised that children might develop more problems in the future. However, at the one‐year follow‐up, the children's reports of their psychosocial status were similar to their first assessment or a little better.…”
