En el marco de la teoría de los intereses constitutivos de saberes de Habermas, las ciencias de la salud no han sido posicionadas, de manera formal en ella para explicar, comprender y transformar sus objetos o fenómenos de estudio a profundidad. Los gremios científicos de las ciencias de la salud han analizado estas ciencias y llevado a cabo los procesos de formación, capacitación y educación continua de su personal con el método científico tradicional del positivismo y han relegado el uso de otros métodos científicos “naturalistas-cualitativos” aportados por las ciencias sociales. El propósito de este ensayo es delinear cuatro aspectos teórico-metodológicos que justifican el uso de métodos mixtos, por lo que se proveen experiencias de investigación con esta metodología. Se concluye que, no es el uso de una técnica particular la que define a una persona investigadora como positivista o interpretativa o sociocrítica, sino que es preciso comprender la existencia de una correlación entre el paradigma y los métodos de investigación cuantitativos y cualitativos y su empleo en una metodología mixta, en aras de estudiar la realidad de forma holista, ya que no es productivo dar preferencia a uno solo de estos estilos de pensamiento y excluir las potencialidades de otros. En consecuencia, lo primordial y necesario es examinar la realidad integralmente, con metodologías pluralistas para potenciar su cambio hacia condiciones de mayor equidad y justicia social.

Disaster Risk Assessment of Informal Settlements in the Global South

More than a billion people live in informal settlements worldwide. Their high exposure and vulnerability increase the risk of disaster in their lives. Global changes challenge the capacity to seek practical and quick solutions for the most disadvantaged groups. Most people in Costa Rica reside in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM, or Gran Área Metropolitana in Spanish), and nearly half of the informal settlements of the country are also located there. This paper aims to determine the disaster risk of every informal settlement of the GAM in Costa Rica. The study merges the official information that is available to calculate the hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and the risk levels of every informal settlement in the GAM. Moreover, a risk index for informal settlements in the GAM was created using a Pearson correlation technique, normalizing, and spatially distributing the results in three groups (high, medium, and low). The study outputs indicate that municipalities with a greater number of informal settlements also concentrate the higher risk unit’s percentage. Moreover, a direct statistical relationship is present between the historical number of disaster events in the municipalities with more informal settlements. The urban context proves useful to apply a methodology that could determine the disaster risk level of informal settlements in less-developed countries where baseline information for hazard, exposure, and vulnerability calculation is usually scarce, limited, or low in quality. This research shows the conditions of dozens of countries belonging to the Global South and constitutes a useful example for all of the stakeholders of disaster risk reduction worldwide.

“…Of course, the present research has shown that refugee students are not treated particularly violently by Greek students, especially given what is happening in other countries with a migrant population. For example, Campos-Saborio et al examine the problems and difficulties faced by Nicaraguan immigrant students in the Costa Rican education system, while contrasting their psychosocial and sociocultural well-being with that of their Costa Rican counterparts (Campos-Saborio et al, 2018). The findings not only reveal differences in educational outcomes between these groups, but also reveal the prevalence of psychosocial risk behaviors related to violence, bullying, suicidal thoughts and self-harm suffered by Nicaraguan students.…”

Educating refugee children is a demanding process, as teachers must have special knowledge, skills and attitudes. In Greece, many efforts have been made to educate refugee children by creating refugee reception and integration classes in schools and recruiting temporary staff. Still, teachers face various problems in language teaching and children's integration into the school environment. The purpose of this study is to identify the challenges and difficulties faced by teachers who teach refugee students and to explore their intercultural competence and readiness. Eight interviews were conducted for the research. The results show that participants face many problems due to a lack of training material, tools and resources. The characteristics of refugee children slow down the educational process, while the unpreparedness and inadequacy of teachers in intercultural education complicate the situation. However, the education of refugees can be improved, provided that the intercultural education of teachers is enriched and appropriate educational material (school books, guides, toolkits) is provided.
