Psychophysiological Profiles of Batterers: Autonomic Emotional Reactivity as It Predicts the Antisocial Spectrum of Behavior Among Intimate Partner Abusers.

Abstract: On the basis of studies finding heart rate deceleration among severely violent (SV) batterers (J. M. Gottman et al., 1995) and unsuccessful psychopaths (S. S. Ishikawa, A. Raine, T. Lencz, S. Bihrle, & L. Lacasse, 2001), this study compares the physiological reactivity of SV batterers (n=35) with low-level violent (LLV) batterers (n=37) and nonviolent men (n=21) during 2 laboratory tasks. Men's heart rate and skin conductance level were recorded during baseline, a conflict discussion, and a standardized anger … Show more

“…However, this finding corroborates several others showing no association between IPA status and changes in the intensity of angry feelings experienced in the moment (Babcock, Green, Webb, & Yerington, 2005;Barbour et al, 1998;Eckhardt, 2007). In part, these findings may result from specific problems that IPA perpetrators have with emotional clarity and awareness (Shorey et al, 2011), which could interfere with accurate self-report of these experiences.…”

“…Finally, when the levels of psychopathic traits were compared between partner-violent men and non-violent men, conflicting results were achieved: while Babcock et al (2005Babcock et al ( , 2008, Holtzworth-Munroe et al (2000), and Walsh et al (2010) failed to demonstrate the utility of psychopathy to identify partner-violent men among community samples (non-violent men were as psychopathic as some subtype of partner-violent men), Theobald et al (2015) reported higher levels of psychopathic traits among partner-violent than non-violent men.…”

“…Overall, studies underscored a significant positive small-to-moderate correlation (.19 ≤ r ≤ .39) between psychopathy and IPV perpetration (Babcock et al, 2005;Bates et al, 2017;Coyne et al, 2010;Iyican et al, 2015;Kiire, 2017;Marshall & Holtzworth-Munroe, 2010;Thornton et al, 2016).…”
