“…In addition, they are predictive of illness prognosis, associated with worse antipsychotic side effects, cognitive disturbances, and negative symptoms [1,4,5]. As motor symptoms often do not ameliorate with antipsychotic treatment, they are now increasingly studied as biomarkers to aid the development of more appropriate treatment options [3,6,7]. The importance of studying sensorimotor symptoms is highlighted by the recent addition of a sensorimotor domain as part of the Research Domain Criteria framework of the National Institute of Mental Health [8,9] which aimed to further explore the complex neurobiological mechanisms in disorders such as schizophrenia [1,[10][11][12][13].…”

“…1 Schizophrenia is characterized by a range of symptoms that are present during a significant period in the person's life, in two or more of the following domains: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior, and negative symptoms. 1 It affects about 0.7% of the world population and is characterized by negative, positive, cognitive 2,3 and psychomotor symptoms, 3 like catatonia, extrapyramidal symptoms, psychomotor slowness, and neurological soft signs (NSS). The motor disorders are an important characteristic of the schizophrenia spectrum and have been reported in many phases of the disease, including before onset.…”

“…15 Also, it has been reported that these motor impairments seem to discriminate from other psychotic disorders such as bipolar disorder. 3 For example, delayed gait, limitations in the acquisition of sitting position and stand up without support at an early age 16,17 have been associated as predictors of the disease. 18 Furthermore, a so -called schizophrenia psychomotor syndrome is proposed by some authors as an important nosological characteristic.…”
