Psychometric Properties of the Temperament and Character Inventory–Revised (TCI–R) in a Belgian Sample

Abstract: The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI; Cloninger, Przybeck, Svrakic, & Wetzel, 1994) is a self-questionnaire developed to assess the 7 dimensions of personality described by Cloninger et al. (1994) with a total of 29 subscales. In 1999, a revised version was proposed by Cloninger (TCI-R). In this study, we present psychometric properties of the TCI-R from 958 French-speaking participants of Belgium. Women exhibited higher scores for harm avoidance, reward dependence, and cooperativeness dimensions. The … Show more

“…In the temperament and character domains, sex was associated with Harm Avoidance and Persistence scores, while language ability was associated with Self Directedness scores. The latter results are in agreement with results of Hansenne, Delhez, and Cloninger (2005) indicating differences by sex: women scored higher on Harm Avoidance, Reward Dependence, and Cooperativeness, whereas men scored higher on Persistence. Kurtz (2008) reiterated the importance of sex influences in the analysis of stress among law enforcement personnel: men and women officers work in the same environments, yet in different "genderised" worlds.…”

“…Table 3 shows the scores obtained by the PE participants and their partners on the STAI Y-B, the SIQ and the TCI-R scales. The results are comparable with the norms published respectively by Schweitzer and Paulhan (1990), Kempeneers et al (2000), and Hansenne, Delhez, and Cloninger (2005).…”

“…This particular sensitivity of women to negative affects was previously found with SCR and other psychophysiological indices as well as with subjective ratings of emotions (Bradley, Codispoti, Sabatinelli, & Lang, 2001;Kring & Gordon, 1998). Interestingly, this gender influence was not dependent of HA scores, suggesting that BIS would not be involved in this particular sensitivity, as could have been expected regarding women's classically higher scores in HA and BIS-related scales (Hansenne et al, 2005;Jorm et al, 1999).…”

“…The TCFR is a 240-item self-questionnaire that assesses the seven dimensions of the Cloninger's model where each proposition must be rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (totally disagree) to 5 (totally agree). The translated version of the TCFR used in the study exhibits solid psychometric properties (Hansenne, Delhez, & Cloninger, 2005). After completion, one author (SM) checked if the subjects answered all the items, and if they responded appropriately to the five validity items.…”
