Psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S)

Abstract: Globally, mental health impairments have been described based on the fear of the infection generated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study is to test the psychometric properties of the Spanish validation the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), which has been recently developed to measure fear quantitatively. Participants were recruited through an Internet-based survey. 1077 subjects were included. To establish construct validity, an exploratory factor analysis was performed using the KMO test, which wa… Show more

“…Moderate correlations with depression ( r =0.42) and anxiety ( r =0.51) were reported. Validation studies were performed with samples from Russia and Belarus [ 66 ], Italy [ 67 ], Bangladesh [ 68 ], Turkey [ 69 ], Saudi Arabia [ 70 ], Israel [ 71 ], India [ 72 ], Greece [ 73 ], the United States [ 74 ], Spain [ 75 ], Japan [ 76 ], Cuba [ 77 ], and Mexico [ 78 ]. Overall, the FCV-19S has shown robust psychometric properties across validation studies; the findings predominantly support a unidimensional factor structure.…”

“…Given the severe global threat and impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has produced on different aspects of human survival, health, well-being, and development, Ahorsu et al (2020) designed a scale to measure the fear of this pathogen based on the existing scientific literature: the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S). This scale has been used in a wide range of countries, such as Iran ( Alyami et al, 2020 ), Bangladesh ( Sakib et al, 2020 ), Italy ( Soraci et al, 2020 ), Turkey ( Satici et al, 2020 ), Russia and Belarus ( Reznik et al, 2020 ), Israel ( Tzur Bitan et al, 2020 ), Peru ( Huarcaya-Victoria et al, 2020 ), and Paraguay ( Barrios et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Initially, the instrument consisted of 10 items that, after their psychometric study, eventually resulted in a one-dimensional scale structure composed of seven items and which has adequate psychometric properties [ 15 ]. Following its publication, FCV-19 has been validated in different countries, such as Italy [ 16 ], the United States [ 17 ], Turkey [ 18 ], Paraguay [ 19 ], Poland [ 20 ], or Saudi Arabia [ 21 ]. In Spain, Martínez-Lorca et al [ 22 ] have studied its psychometric properties, also determining the existence of a one-dimensional structure and pointing out the reliability of this instrument, albeit in a sample of 606 university students from the Autonomous Community of Castilla la Mancha, maintaining the seven items.…”
