Psychometric Properties of the German Version of the Early Childhood Screening Assessment

Abstract: Fast and accurate screening for mental health problems in early childhood is a prerequisite for effective early intervention. The Early Childhood Screening Assessment (ECSA) is a valid and standardized screening tool for young children. The aims of the current study were to examine the psychometric properties, the factorial structure, and validity evidence for test score interpretation of the German version of the ECSA. Results of a confirmatory factor analysis support a two-factor solution differentiating ext… Show more

“…In contrast, ego-undercontrol is negatively associated with CCQ anxiety at age six and negatively but not significantly at age twelve. The significantly different correlations of ego-undercontrol with aggressiveness compared to anxiety are in line with other research (Krueger et al, 1996 ) and can already be found in early childhood (Zimmermann et al, 2022 ). It characterizes the specific theoretical concept of ego-control as a continuum from undercontrol to overcontrol (Funder and Block, 1989 ; Block, 2002 ; Block and Block, 2006 ).…”

“…These findings corroborate the relevance of ego-resiliency as a fundamental dimension of effective self-regulation and adjustment (Block and Block, 2006 ; Taylor et al, 2014 ; Syed et al, 2020 ). Ego-resiliency is a marker of effective and situation-appropriate adjustment of self-control and goes along with both low internalizing and low externalizing symptoms from early childhood to adolescence (Scholte et al, 2005 ; Martel and Nigg, 2006 ; Hofer et al, 2010 ; Meier and Zimmermann, 2018 ; Zimmermann et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Meier et al (2020) found, that both over- and under-benefit were associated with more depressive symptoms in both partners. Therefore, fathers scoring higher in depressive symptoms could have a more negative view of their child’s emotional and behavioral problems, as depressive symptoms were associated with the report of child’s emotional and behavioral problems (Zimmermann et al, 2021). However, how exactly positive DC affects child adjustment seems not quite clear yet and thus more research is needed.…”

“…Both parents assessed the child's emotional and behavioral problems by completing the German version (Zimmermann et al, 2021) of the Early Childhood Screening Assessment (Gleason et al, 2010) at 4 years after birth (T7). Parents report the frequency of each behavior with 36 items (e.g., "My child seems sad, cries a lot" or "My child is very scared of certain things (needles, insects)").…”

“…A total emotional and behavioral problem score is the mean score of all 36 items. The ECSA/SFK demonstrated strong convergent and criterion validity, high internal consistency, and test-retest reliability [74,76]. In the current study we used mother reports of emotional and behavioral problems (Cronbach's α = 0.77) and father reports (Cronbach's α = 0.80) separately.…”
