Psychometric properties of a brief inventory for the screening of personality disorders: The SCATI

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to report on the psychometric properties of a revised version of a brief inventory designed to screen and assess personality disorders. The short form of the Coolidge Axis II Inventory (SCATI) is a 70-item, self-report, form of the 250-item Coolidge Axis II Inventory (CATI). On a community sample of 588 adults (range=16-88 years), the median internal scale reliability for the 14 personality disorder scales was .66, and the median test-retest reliability (1 week) was .83. “…The significant-other, short form (70 items) of the Coolidge Axis II Inventory (SCATI; Coolidge et al, 2010) was used to measure traits associated with 10 personality disorders (PDs) as defined by the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM–5 ; American Psychiatric Association, 2013a), 2 PDs (depressive and passive-aggressive) as defined in Appendix B of the fourth edition of the DSM ( DSM–IV–TR ; American Psychiatric Association, 2000), and 2 PDs (sadistic and self-defeating) as defined by the third edition of the DSM ( DSM–III–R ; American Psychiatric Association, 1987). Although the 14 SCATI PD scales strictly measure traits associated with personality disorders (rather than the full disorders), each of the scales is composed of five items (with sums ranging from 5 to 20) that draw their language directly from the first five DSM criteria of each PD.…”

“…In this study, the 70-item Coolidge Axis-II Inventory -Short Form (SCATI) (Coolidge, 2001) was used to measure PDs. This inventory has been used to predict PDs in subclinical (Coolidge, Segal, Cahill, & Simenson, 2010) and clinical (Watson & Sinha, 1996) populations and in other studies (e.g., Davison & Furnham, 2018). The measure assesses 14 PDs, three (depressive, sadistic, and self-defeating) more than in the DSM-IV system.…”
