Psychometric Properties and Development of a Scale Designed to Evaluate the Potential of Predatory Violent Behavior

Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop and determine the psychometric properties of an instrument designed to detect traits and behavior that are associated with predatory violent behavior, which is defined as a determined, planned, controlled, and proactive aggression. The sample was comprised of 564 students, mostly in their last year of high school, or in their first year of college. The initial instrument had 78 items, ultimately resulting in 13 with good internal consistency (α = 0.825). Factor analys… Show more

“…A t-test was used to evaluate the discrimination capacity of each item based on the levels of violence ( Penagos-Corzo et al, 2019 ). EFA was conducted with SPSS 17.0 to discover the scale factor structure.…”

“…This sample was divided into two groups to test the discrimination capability of the items: One with the 27% of participants who obtained the highest scores and another with the 27% of participants who obtained the lowest scores. With these two groups, the discrimination capability of the items was analyzed through a t-test, comparing the high vs. low group in each item ( Penagos-Corzo et al, 2019 ). Four items that did not have significant differences at a confidence level of 0.01 were discarded.…”

“…(2) there will be a positive relationship between the resentment dimension of the BSVT-11 and the interpersonal resentment factor of the Collectivist-Sensitive Trait Forgivingness Scale (TFS-CS) [54]; (3) the revenge justification dimension would have a positive relationship with the self-justice factor of the Potential Predatory Violence Inventory (PPVI) [55]; (4) positive relationships were expected between the total BSVT-11 and each of the concurrent validity scales used.…”

“…To assess the concurrent validity of the BSVT, it was proposed that there would be relationships between three scales conceptually linked to the dimensions assessed by the BSVT-11. The following hypotheses were, therefore, posed: (1) there will be a positive relationship between the revenge planning dimension of the BSVT-11 and the revenge motivation factor of the Transgression-Related Interpersonal Motivations (TRIM-12) [ 30 ]; (2) there will be a positive relationship between the resentment dimension of the BSVT-11 and the interpersonal resentment factor of the Collectivist-Sensitive Trait Forgivingness Scale (TFS-CS) [ 54 ]; (3) the revenge justification dimension would have a positive relationship with the self-justice factor of the Potential Predatory Violence Inventory (PPVI) [ 55 ]; (4) positive relationships were expected between the total BSVT-11 and each of the concurrent validity scales used.…”
