Although awareness about autism has increased in developed countries, more so than in developing countries, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains poorly understood by most South Africans, especially those in remote areas and in areas where research is limited. Furthermore, intervention services are often scarce or not available due to lack of knowledge amongst healthcare professionals. The current study aimed to explore caregivers’ experiences of children with ASD in the Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The study adopted a qualitative approach, and data was collected using semi-structured interviews, in which an interview guide was used. Twelve participants were selected purposively from the three different schools in the Ehlanzeni District and interviewed for the study. The data was analysed using thematic content analysis. The study adhered to ethical considerations. The findings of the study indicated that caregivers of children diagnosed with ASD experienced psychological stress; social stress; financial burden; lack of family support; and reported unavailability and accessibility of services. Therefore, information regarding a range of inexpensive interventions and educational programmes should be available for caregivers in order to reduce their psychological and social stress. Medicines should be available and accessible within the district to avoid caregivers having to travel long hours to access them, and to reduce their financial burden. Caregivers’ support groups should also be established.

Introduction: Burden experienced by mother can delayed the success of therapy to ASD children. This study aims to determine the correlation of psychosocial factors and caregiver burden in mothers with ASD children.Methods: This study was a cross-sectional analytic study on mothers with ASD children at the Children's Daycare Dr.Soetomo General Hospital. The research instrument used sociodemographic questionnaire and a Caregiver Burden Assessment (CBA). Results: This study was followed by 26 mothers with ASD children. Results: The results showed that 50% of mothers experienced moderate burdens and 34% experienced severe burdens. The results of the correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between caregiver burden and maternal age (p<0.05, r=0.316) and child age (p<0.05, r=0.274). Support and assistance from others in caring for GSA children also correlated with the mother's caregiver burden (p<0.05, r=0.118). Maternal caregiver burden is not correlated with marital status, education level, occupation, and economic status. Conclusion: Mothers with ASD children experience a psychological burden while caring for ASD children. Psychosocial support and assistance from the environment are urgently needed to reduce the caregiver burden on mothers so that they can improve the outcomes of interventions and therapy for children with ASD.

Objective There is no study comparing schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in terms of caregiver burden. This study aims to compare the caregiver burden among family members of the patients with schizophrenia and ASD and investigate the predictive factors.Methods A cross-sectional study with the family members living with and/or providing care to their patients was carried out. A sociodemographic form, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Self-Stigma Inventory for Families, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale were utilized. Regression analyses were conducted to determine the predictive factors for higher burden. Results Caregiver burden in ASD was significantly higher than in schizophrenia. Regression analysis showed that the predictors of high caregiver burden were the need for self-care (OR=3.6), self-destructive behaviors (OR=3.4), self-stigma (OR=1.1), depression (OR=1.1), and level of income (OR=1.0) for all family members. When the diagnosis was removed from the equation, the factors determining the high burden did not change. Conclusion This study suggests that characteristics of the illness are stronger predictors than family members' characteristics in explaining high caregiver burden for both illnesses. Psychological, social, and economic supports should be provided for families to help alleviate their caregiving burden.
