Understanding the Relationship between Assistive Technologies and Disabled People’s Entrepreneurship

This research aims to enhance our understanding of the relationship between assistive technologies (ATs) and disabled entrepreneurs, specifically who these latter are and how they perceive the value of assistive technologies. Nineteen in-depth semi-structured interviews were carried out remotely with disabled self-employed individuals from France to answer the research question. Semantic analysis was used to make sense of and synthesize the main emerging ideas. The results identified five themes grouped into three main categories. The first is related to the description of the disabled entrepreneurs’ profile, which goes beyond the classic categorization of entrepreneurship. They have developed through their experiences some specific entrepreneurial competencies: personal self-knowledge, self-management, self-awareness, self-assertion, resilience, persistence, courage, emotional intelligence, innovation and adaptability. The second is related to the perceived value of assistive technologies to disabled entrepreneurs and their impact on their daily life. In fact, the disabled entrepreneurs’ use of assistive technologies was found to have implications for the enhancement of their social inclusion and quality of life by gaining more independence, self-control, self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as knowledge and skills. Finally, despite the personal and professional benefits of assistive technologies, issues of digital accessibility were noted as challenges (desires for future assistive technological devices).

This study examines the effect of entrepreneurial capacity, both directly and indirectly, through entrepreneurial characteristics on the performance recovery speed of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The entrepreneurial capacity consists of financial access and market access. Meanwhile, entrepreneurial characteristics include the need for achievement, risk-taking propensity, and internal locus of control. The data were obtained through a field survey of MSME entrepreneurs engaged in the food and beverage sector in three cities including; Semarang, Surakarta, and Salatiga, Indonesia. The total sample was 397 respondents and used SEM-PLS analysis to test the hypothesis. This study shows that financial access, the need for achievement, and the internal locus of control positively affect MSMEs' performance recovery speed after the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the mediating effect testing demonstrates that the need for achievement and internal locus of control mediate the effect of financial access on the performance recovery speed of MSMEs. Therefore, stakeholders interested in developing the MSMEs are suggested to intensify their efforts to increase their ability to access finance and strengthen the entrepreneurial characteristics among the MSME entrepreneurs.

The individual‐opportunity (IO) nexus has been a highly influential perspective in entrepreneurship, but its market‐focused and variance‐deterministic character pose serious limitations where entrepreneurship is intended as a development policy for disabled people. The extant research in disability entrepreneurship converges in the recognition of structural barriers faced by disabled entrepreneurs, but in most cases, the multilevel challenges only translate to adaptive mechanisms at an individual level. When the IO nexus is adopted as a lens, its variance‐deterministic setup and market‐focused outcome definitions are in favor of entrepreneurs with conventional characteristics, but less helpful for a policy purpose where substantial non‐economic value could be overlooked. Two critical points for consideration in disability entrepreneurship research are the role of context in which the disabled entrepreneurs are embedded, and the influences of different levels of analysis.
