Psychological androgyny: Theories, methods, and conclusions.

Abstract: Methodological and conceptual problems in existing psychological androgyny research are illuminated by application of the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) model, which views masculinity and femininity as a pair of "crossed" independent variables, with androgynous, male-typed, female-typed, and undifferentiated sex-role categories represented in the cells of the resultant two-bytwo table. Foremost among previously overlooked theoretical points is that the Spence, Helmreich, and Stapp (1975) "high/high" and … Show more

“…Theorists have posited that individuals who are gender nonconforming have optimal mental health (Taylor & Hall, 1982), given that conforming to strict gender identities can be inhibiting (Woodhill & Samuels, 2004), and because certain gender norms are inherently dysfunctional, such as restrictions on men's emotionality (Mahalik et al, 2003).…”

“…As indexes of self-reported instrumental/agentic and communal/expressive tendencies, respectively, they predict primarily to domains that draw on those tendencies (cf. Feather, 1984;Spence, 1984Spence, , 1985; M. C. Taylor & Hall, 1982). For example, being high in communal characteristics might be related to success in an occupation like nursing that presumably draws on communality, but would not necessarily predict success in an occupation unrelated to communion, like cooking.…”

“…Androgyny as an Interactive Concept Taylor and Hall's (1982) review of the literature lends strong support to arguments that masculinity rather than androgyny predicts adjustment for both sexes. They advocated analyzing the data via a two-way ANOVA (high M, low M) X (high F, low F) which would allow researchers to examine the effects of androgyny apart from the main effects of masculinity and femininity; rather than classifying people into sex-role groups on the basis of a median-split of M and F scores, and then analyzing the data via a one-way ANOVA over sex-role classifications.…”

“…Since that time however, the validity of the BSRI and PAQ as measures of masculinity and femininity has been called into question. Moreover, a general consensus is emerging that it is BSRI masculinity, not androgyny which predicts adjustment for both sexes (Taylor & Hall, 1982).…”
