Sociocultural Adjustment and Coping Strategies of Korean and Japanese Students in a Thai International College

This study is devoted to understanding the adjustment issues Japanese and Korean international students face in Thai international higher education. An exploratory study of 15 visiting Korean college students and 15 visiting Japanese college students in Thai international programs was conducted using qualitative methods. A series of 30 face-to-face in-depth interviews regarding the participants' sociocultural adjustment to their host community was conducted in 2015-2016. Participants responded to open-ended questions regarding their adjustment experiences and perceptions of the host culture. The interview data was thematically coded into several categories. Participants' experiences were diverse and ranged from very subtle forms of discrimination and stereotyping to sexual harassment. The most frequently reported impediments to sociocultural adjustment included Thai language issues, excessive undesirable attention from the host community, academic adjustment, and difficulty establishing friendships with the host nationals. The most commonly reported coping strategies reported were the use of social support networks and social isolation from the host community. Implications for international relations departments and international programs within a Thai context are discussed.

Cet article analyse les effets de l’acculturation sur l’apprentissage des étudiant(e)s d’Afrique subsaharienne suivant une formation professionnelle en santé et travail social en Suisse romande. Il concerne une recherche que nous avons menée pour comprendre les conditions d’apprentissage et d’intégration de ces étudiants. Notre approche se fonde sur les théories de la communication interculturelle, de l’interculturalisation et de l’apprentissage des adultes avec une démarche méthodologique qualitative : entretiens compréhensifs et semi-directifs ainsi que l’étude de dossiers administratifs d’étudiants. Des pistes de réflexion pour une meilleure intégration des étudiants étrangers sont proposées.This article analyzes the effects of acculturation on the training of sub-Saharan African students at the University of applied sciences Western Switzerland in the field of public health and social work. The authors report on a research undertaken to understand the conditions of training and integration of these students. The study is conducted from a theoretical approach based on intercultural communication, inter-culturalization and adult education using qualitative methods such as interviews, semi-structured questionnaires and analysis of students’ records. Proposals for improved integration of foreign students are presented.Este artículo analiza los efectos de la aculturación en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes de África subsahariana en formación profesional en salud y trabajo social, en Suiza francesa. Se trata de una investigación que se llevó a cabo para entender las condiciones de aprendizaje y de integración de estos alumnos. La problemática fue abordada con un enfoque centrado en las teorías de la comunicación intercultural, de la inter-culturalización y del aprendizaje de los adultos con un proceso metodológico cualitativo : entrevistas exhaustivas y semidirigidas así como el estudio de registros académicos de alumnos. Se proponen pistas de reflexión para una mejor integración de los estudiantes extranjeros
