Psychiatric Referrals Associated with Substance Use Disorders: Prevalence and Gender Differences

Abstract: A psychoactive substance use disorder (ICD-10) was diagnosed in 28% of 1222 psychiatric referrals in six general hospitals in Finland. In the age group 35 o 50 years, 53% of men and 29% of women had a substance use disorder. In the age group 35 to 50 years, sociodemographic characteristics differentiated men diagnosed with substance use disorders from other male consultation patients, but women with substance use disorders were similar to other female consultation patients.
