Psychiatric disorders in advanced cancer

Abstract: Label‐free microcolony identification via elastic light scattering was investigated for three different genera: Salmonella enterica serovar Montevideo, Listeria monocytogenes F4244, and Escherichia coli DH5α. Microcolonies were defined as bacterial colonies in their late‐lag phase to early‐exponential phase with the diameter range of 100–200 µm. To link biophysical characteristics with corresponding scattering patterns, a phase contrast microscope and a confocal displacement meter were used to measure the colo… Show more

“…A depressão em pacientes com câncer avançado influencia mais o desejo de "abreviar a vida" do que a presença de dor, apesar de a maioria dos pacientes desejar receber cuidado contínuo e alívio dos sintomas, mesmo quando a doença está em progressão 34 . Surpreendentemente, menos da metade dos pacientes com câncer avançado, com sintomas depressivos de moderados a graves, recebe tratamento com antidepressivos 35 .…”

“…On the one hand, it is known that a third of all cancer patients receiving oncological treatment, and half of the patients who have advanced cancer, suffer from mental distress, to an extent that they can be diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder (Derogatis et al, 1983;Härter et al, 2000;Atesci et al, 2004;Miovic and Block, 2007;Singer et al, 2007;Walker et al, 2007). On the other hand, physicians and nurses often fail to identify distressed patients (Newell et al, 1998;Fallowfield et al, 2001;Söllner et al, 2001;Keller et al, 2004), resulting in under-treatment in 40 -90% of the cases (Flatten et al, 2003;Singer et al, 2005).…”

“…Various mental disorders predominantly anxiety-depression spectrum were identified in 95,6% of cancer patients by clinicopsychiatric study that differs a great deal from commonly-accepted opinion concerning psychopathology at cancer patient (Miovic & Block, 2007). Most cancer patients have mental disorders regardless of types of malignant tumors.…”
