Psychiatric Comorbidities of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: It Is a Matter of Microglia’s Gut Feeling

Gohar Fakhfouri,
Nataša R. Mijailović,
Reza Rahimian

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a common term for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic, relapse-remitting condition of the gastrointestinal tract that is increasing worldwide. Psychiatric comorbidities, including depression and anxiety, are more prevalent in IBD patients than in healthy individuals. Evidence suggests that varying levels of neuroinflammation might underlie these states in IBD patients. Within this context, microglia are the crucial non-neural cells in the brain responsible for… Show more

“…Expanding on our previous analyses, we examined the overlap between IBD-associated genes and genes implicated in various brain disorders. There were many previous reports of comorbidities between IBD and neurological conditions (Fakhfouri G et al, 2024;Bernstein C et al, 2019). This analysis provides insights into the shared genetic architecture between these conditions.…”

“…Neutrophils play a crucial role in gut-brain inflammation, as they are involved in the immune response and can migrate from the gut to the brain [16]. Their migration is facilitated by the dysregulation of pathways during dysbiosis, leading to altered permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB).…”
