PRRS: Effect on herd performance after initial infection and risk analysis

Abstract: SUMMARYIn early 1991, the Dutch pig industry was struck by Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS). Data from 91 breeding and/or farrow to finish herds that were positive for PRRS were used to investigate the impact of PRRS on productivity and to evaluate the relationship between PRRS and farm and management factors. The farms involved used the CBK management information system. Results show that herd performance was severely affected by PRRS over a period of 4-6 months. A rough economic evaluatio… Show more

“…Acute reproductive failure in sows was observed when PRRSV was introduced in the Tolakker herd, which agreed with numerous other reports [1,2,[24][25][26]. Four months later, the performance parameters returned to the level before the outbreak.…”

“…Losses are extremely variable, both in extent and duration and it is important to discriminate between the effects of the disease in the epidemic and endemic phases. In many cases in Britain economic losses have been minimalbut others have reported extreme economic loss (Hoefling, 1990;Dykhuizen et al, 1991;Loula, 1991;Vogel et al, 1991;Frankena et al, 1992;Polson et al, 1992;White, 1992) varying between 1-25 pigs and £65 per sow per year (Blackburn, 1991;Mortensen & Madsen, 1992;Brouwer et al, 1994) and 0-20% of annual production (Lindhaus & Lindhaus, 1991;Raymakers, 1991;Van Alstine, 1991;Zinamerman, 1991) or an annual loss in the USA of $18 per finishing space (Moore et al, 1990). An additional burden may be loss of trading status for seropositive breeding stock.…”

“…La duración de las secuelas está relacionadas con la variación en las manifestaciones clínicas de la enfermedad. Al inicio, se caracteriza por una fuerte caída de los parámetros reproductivos, luego el PRRS se vuelve endémico, donde finalmente se recuperan los niveles reproductivos previos (Brouwer et al, 1994), aunque la infección mantiene las posibilidades de emerger después de un prolongado intervalo (López-Heydeck, 2015). 16 veces).…”
