The anthropometry of the proximal femur holds great clinical significance in designing implants and prostheses for proximal femoral fractures and hip joint arthroplasties. Surgical fixation with a properly matched prosthesis plays a crucial role in improving long-term treatment outcomes and preventing postoperative complications such as osteolysis with aseptic loosening and increased load. The femur is also one of the most commonest used bones for stature estimation. Often during forensic investigations, only fragmented remains of femur are found available from which femoral length is estimated by application of linear regression equations. The estimated femoral length thus obtained is used for stature estimation of the unidentified individual. This study has measured nine bony parameters from the proximal femur in a total of 96 dry femora. These measurements include the vertical head diameter, neck diameter, neck thickness, neck length, neck shaft angle, the transverse diameter of the fovea, longitudinal diameter of the fovea, foveal depth, and the intertrochanteric line length. In addition, the total length of the femur was also measured. The results were tabulated and statistically analyzed using SPSS software, version 25. The mean femoral head diameter was observed to be 41.59±3.25 mm, mean foveal depth was found to be 2.95±0.75 mm, mean foveal transverse and longitudinal diameters were observed to be 11.38±2.35 mm and 15.94±3.37 mm, respectively. The mean neck diameter was 29.45±3.33 mm. Mean neck length and neck thickness were observed to be 36.06±4.94 mm and 27.61±2.71 mm, respectively. Neck shaft angle was noted to range from 109° to 128°, with a mean of 119.08°±5.18°. The mean length of the inter-trochanteric line was measured to be 41.92±3.9 mm. The mean femoral length was observed to be 42.11±2.91 cm. Significant positive correlations were found between the various measured proximal morphometric parameters of the femur. The length of the femur showed a maximum positive correlation with the vertical head diameter, followed by the neck diameter, thickness, and foveal depth. The findings of this study can throw further light on the existing data. They can serve as a guideline for designing better-matched prostheses and implants for hip surgeries in the eastern Uttar Pradesh population.

This review article will present an overview of biological profiles in forensic utilities. The biological profile of the skull in the existing literature can help to identify humans, especially if the condition of the victim found is a result of mutilation or a bomb explosion. When it comes to the precision of identifying skeletal remains, the human skull is frequently cited as being first in the estimation of age and ancestry and second in terms of sex and stature. It can be an alternative to assessing the following biological parameters: sex, age, stature, and ancestry. The implementation of biological profiles in the identification process is very important considering that some cases require the assistance of forensic anthropology. This review article shows the importance of the value of skulls. The method that can be applied is craniometry which can be used to determine sex, age, stature, and estimated ancestry. Different results will occur depending on the completeness of the skull. Therefore, estimation formulas have different accurate results. Discriminant function analysis has been performed on various measurement sets and its discriminant power has been validated by many researchers. Geometric morphometric analysis has become the main tool for shape analysis and many attempts have been made to use it in analyzing skulls. Several methods supported by technology have also been developed. It is hoped that the review article will show significant differences in results between studies in Thailand and Indonesia, even though they are in the same racial group.

Background:The study explores the intricate anatomy of the proximal femur in the Indian population, emphasizing its significance in clinical, forensic, and orthopaedic contexts. Utilizing Gray's Anatomy and relevant literature, the study positions femoral anatomy as crucial for clinicians and researchers. Existing studies on femur length reconstruction contribute to forensic applications, while orthopaedic research underscores the importance of anatomical measurements in surgical interventions. Methodology: This cross-sectional study includes 165 femora from diverse regions in India. Anthropometric measurements, including femoral length, neck shaft angle, femoral head diameter, foveal dimensions, and intertrochanteric line length, were collected using standardized techniques. Statistical analyses and comparisons with existing literature, particularly studies conducted in various regions of India, were performed to provide a comprehensive understanding of regional variations. Results: Demographic characteristics, neck shaft angle, inter-epicondylar distance, femoral length, and femoral head diameter were analyzed. Comparison tables with southern, northern, eastern, and northeastern Indian studies highlight regional variations. Correlation analysis reveals positive correlations between femoral length and various parameters, while the absence of correlations with the neck shaft angle suggests relationship complexity. Conclusion:The study enhances understanding of proximal femur characteristics in the Indian population, providing essential data for optimizing hip arthroplasty procedures. Regional variabilities underscore the importance of nuanced approaches in clinical practice. This research contributes to the field, paving the way for future advancements in hip surgery tailored to diverse populations.
