Providing guidance in virtual lab experimentation: the case of an experiment design tool

Abstract: The present study employed a quasi-experimental design to assess a computerbased tool, which was intended to scaffold the task of designing experiments when using a virtual lab for the process of experimentation. In particular, we assessed the impact of this tool on primary school students' cognitive processes and inquiry skills before and after the study's treatment, using pre-and post-tests. Our research design involved a group of students who used the computer-based tool/scaffold to design the study's exper… Show more

“…Two worksheets were constructed to be used in combination with the DA. In these worksheets guidance of student’s attention to the important aspects of the learning task was achieved by breaking tasks to smaller, simpler, more manageable (sub)tasks (Efstathiou et al, 2018 ; De Jong, 2019 ).…”

“…In these worksheets guidance of student's attention to the important aspects of the learning task Fig. 5 Stages followed for the design of the DA was achieved by breaking tasks to smaller, simpler, more manageable (sub)tasks (Efstathiou et al, 2018;. More specifically, the first worksheet (WS1) was constructed in such a way to follow the above-mentioned steps of activities according to the POE model.…”

“…In the course of developing Go-Lab, a series of experimental studies aiming at the student level have been conducted, mainly to measure the effect of specific versions of apps (see e.g., van Riesen et al 2018 ; Efstathiou et al 2018 ; Kuang et al 2020 ). The results of these studies were used for the (re)design of those Go-Lab apps.…”
