Providing access to a multimedia archive using the World Wide Web and an object-relational database management system

Abstract: Reformatting information currently held in databases into Web pages requires signi cant e ort in both creating the pages initially and their subsequent maintenance. We avoid these costs by coupling a Web server indirectly to a multimedia database using additional software we have developed. This software layer translates Web requests for information into SQL queries, and generates Web pages dynamically to display the results to the user. The method we have developed allows users to query the database directly … Show more

“…While there is clearly a need for hypermedia information delivery, only a few exemplar hypermedia applications have been reported in the literature, including those for maintenance applications Fakun 1998, Hsu et al 1999), medical record keeping (Ip et al 1995) and historical archives (Dunlop et al 1996). When reviewing previous applications, it is noticeable that the majority of published industrial hypermedia applications use manually generated pointto-point embedded link technology, which while easy to implement is very di cult to manage and maintain.…”
