Provenance-type Trials of Eucalyptus Camaldulensis and E. Tereticornis in South Africa and South-West Africa: Eight-year Results

Abstract: SYNOPSISNine composite trials of E. camaldulensis and E. tereticornis were planted in South Africa and SouthWest Africa during 1973 and 1974. Forty-nine seedlots of both species were included in this series of trials. In the more humid areas E. tereticornis consistently outperformed E. camaldulensis in growth and stem form quality, but was inferior to E. grandis where those two species existed side-by-side.In the dry to arid areas and where heavy frosts occur E. camaldulensis was superior in survival and growth… Show more

“…Stem form is generally poor depending largely on provenance. Darrow (1983) reports the same findings for South Africa, where the provenances from Northern Queensland performed best. E. camaldulensis is probably the most important woodlot species for semi-arid areas in Southern Africa and provenance testing and tree-breeding should be intensified and co-ordinated.…”

“…Performs better than E. camaldulensis on moist sites, but is then outgrown by Eucalyptus grandis (Darrow, 1983). E.grandis X E.tereticornis hybrids performed well at Roodewal and Darrow (1983) suggests that this hybrid may be suitable for sites which are just too dry for E.grandis.…”

“…In comparison, land races developed through less intensive methods in South Africa (Darrow, 1983), Madagascar (Rakotomanarnpison, 1983, Zimbabwe (Matheson and Mullin, 1987), and Argentina (Marco, 1983) have been less productive than Australian provenances. Because most of the new Australian provenances added to the Florida fourth-generation genetic base population, GPOP77, were from southeastern Queensland and northern New South Wales, the Florida population could be usefully expanded by the inclusion of individual seedlots from the northern part of the range.…”

“…Skolmen (1986) reported that the best and the worst provenances in Hawaii were evident at age 1 year and definite by 3 years. Darrow (1983) concluded that superior seedlots selected at 4 years in South Africa generally maintained their superiority to 8 years.…”
