Provenance of Ancient Textiles—a Pilot Study Evaluating the Strontium Isotope System in Wool*

Abstract: Strontium isotopes are used in archaeology to reconstruct human and animal migration routes. We present results of a pilot study applying strontium isotope analyses to modern sheep hair as a basis for its potential use as a provenance tracer for ancient woollen textiles. Our hydrofluoric acid‐based, lipid soluble analytical protocol, also tested on a number of ancient textile fibres, allows for contamination‐free, low blank strontium isotope analysis of minimal amounts of archaeological material. 87Sr/86Sr rat… Show more

“…The water soluble and/or exchangeable fractions are commonly targeted for studying biogeochemical cycling (e.g. Drouet et al, 2007;Fang et al, 2007;Frei et al, 2009;Leybourne and Johannesson, 2008;Loell et al, 2011;Miller et al, 1993;Poszwa et al, 2000;Tyler, 2004) …”

“…Until recently, this question was not possible to answer, but the development of several new methodologies designed to fill this gap, can potentially provide new important information regarding the provenance of an ancient textile's raw material. These methodologies apply the Sr isotope tracing system as an archeometrical tool and include deep precleaning procedures to ensure the removal of contaminants (Frei et al, 2009a. This contribution aims at presenting the results of such methodological approaches using 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios for an attempt to define the provenance of textiles.…”

“…On the other hand, hair has much lower Sr concentrations of ca. 0.05-15 ppm (Frei et al, 2009a). Consequently, the pre-cleaning protocol, the ion chromatographic separation of the Sr and the final mass spectrometrical analyses are more difficult because they create generally a greater methodological and analytical challenge than those for tooth enamel and bone tissues.…”

“…El análisis comparado de las características técnicas (hilo, manufactura textil, bordes) nos revela que los textiles fueron producidos localmente. Las primeras isotopías de estroncio confirman este resultado (von Carnap-Bornheim, Nosch, Grupe, Mekota, Schweissing, 2007;Frei, Frei, Mannering, Gleba, Nosch, Lyngstrøm, 2009).…”
