Protoporphyrin Extracted from Biomass Waste as Sustainable Corrosion Inhibitors of T22 Carbon Steel in Acidic Environments

Abstract: Carbon steel is one of the most employed materials in many industrial sectors due to its unique physical and mechanical properties. However, within a certain period of time, carbon steel-based materials are susceptible to corrosion under operating conditions and corrosion inhibitors are important to extending the limit of use of carbon steel. In this study, the influence of protoporphyrin from animal blood hemin as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for T22 carbon steel in an acidic environment (0.5 M HCl) wa… Show more

“…The Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) further confirmed this conclusion (Fig. 2b), as the characteristic bands of the ligand skeleton in ZnP (around 1398 cm -1 and 1540 cm -1 ) and ZnC (around 1643 cm -1 , 2890 cm -1 and 3298 cm -1 ) 16 , the propionic acid groups (around 833 cm -1 , 1700 cm -1 and 3303 cm -1 ) in ZnPP 17 , and N-methylpyridine groups (around 1090 cm -1 , 1342 cm -1 , 1454 cm -1 and 1632 cm -1 ) in ZnTMPyP 18 , can all be observed.…”

“…The Langmuir isotherm is in good agreement with the experimental findings. The general form of the Langmuir isotherm model is shown in below equation [53][54][55][56][57] : where, θ , K ads , and C are the metal surface coverage, the equilibrium constant for the adsorption-desorption process, and the inhibitor concentration, respectively. As can be seen, when a graph is drawn between (C/θ), and C, a straight line (R 2 > 0.9) is formed for all samples, as shown in Fig.…”

“…Porphyrin derivatives, designed to easily distort their planar geometry, are highly recognised for their capacity to act as sensitive materials in formulations of optical [ 1 , 2 ], fluorescent [ 3 , 4 ], potentiometric [ 5 , 6 ] and electrochemical sensors [ 7 , 8 ]. More structures of diversely substituted porphyrins and metalloporphyrins proved their utility in acting as corrosion inhibitors for carbon–steel devices, working in both saline [ 9 , 10 , 11 ] and aggressive acid media [ 12 , 13 ]. Recently, as the global energy demand increases, and because hydrogen is considered to be a sustainable choice [ 14 , 15 ], its generation via the electrochemical water splitting method [ 16 , 17 ] involves porphyrins and metalloporphyrins as catalytic materials [ 18 ].…”
