Multifunctional hybrid materials with applications in gas sensing or dye removal from wastewaters were obtained by incorporation into silica matrices of either Pt(II)-5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-allyloxy-phenyl)-porphyrin (PtTAOPP) or platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) alone or accompanied by 5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-allyloxy-phenyl)-porphyrin (TAOPP). The tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)-based silica matrices were obtained by using the sol-gel method performed in two step acid-base catalysis. Optical, structural and morphological properties of the hybrid materials were determined and compared by UV-vis, fluorescence and FT-IR spectroscopy techniques, by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. PtTAOPP-silica hybrid was the most efficient material both for CO2 adsorption (0.025 mol/g) and for methylene blue adsorption (7.26 mg/g) from wastewaters. These results were expected due to both the ink-bottle mesopores having large necks that exist in this hybrid material and to the presence of the porphyrin moiety that facilitates chemical interactions with either CO2 gas or the dye molecule. Kinetic studies concerning the mechanism of dye adsorption demonstrated a second order kinetic model, thus it might be attributed to both physical and chemical processes.

Porphyrins are versatile structures capable of acting in multiple ways. A mixed substituted A3B porphyrin, 5-(3-hydroxy-phenyl)-10,15,20-tris-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-porphyrin and its Pt(II) complex, were synthesised and fully characterised by 1H- and 13C-NMR, TLC, UV-Vis, FT-IR, fluorescence, AFM, TEM and SEM with EDX microscopy, both in organic solvents and in acidic mediums. The pure compounds were used, firstly, as sensitive materials for sensitive and selective optical and fluorescence detection of hydroquinone with the best results in the range 0.039–6.71 µM and a detection limit of 0.013 µM and, secondly, as corrosion inhibitors for carbon–steel (OL) in an acid medium giving a best performance of 88% in the case of coverings with Pt-porphyrin. Finally, the electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) of the free-base and Pt-metalated A3B porphyrins was evaluated in strong alkaline and acidic electrolyte solutions. The best results were obtained for the electrode modified with the metalated porphyrin, drop-casted on a graphite substrate from an N,N-dimethylformamide solution. In the strong acidic medium, the electrode displayed an HER overpotential of 108 mV, at i = −10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope value of 205 mV/dec.

Metalloporphyrins are highly recognized for their capacity to act as sensitive substances used in formulation of optical, fluorescent, and electrochemical sensors. A novel compound, namely Pt(II)-5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-allyloxy-phenyl) porphyrin, was synthesized by metalation with PtCl2(PhCN)2 of the corresponding porphyrin base and was fully characterized by UV-vis, fluorimetry, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR methods. The fluorescence response of this Pt-porphyrin in the presence of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide was investigated. Besides, modified glassy carbon electrodes with this Pt-porphyrin (Pt-Porf-GCE) were realized and several electrochemical characterizations were comparatively performed with bare glassy carbon electrodes (GCE), in the absence or presence of hydrogen peroxide. The Pt-porphyrin demonstrated to be a successful sensitive material for the detection of hydrogen peroxide both by fluorimetric method in a concentration range relevant for biological samples (1.05–3.9 × 10−7 M) and by electrochemical method, in a larger concentration range from 1 × 10−6 M to 5 × 10−5 M. Based on different methods, this Pt-porphyrin can cover detection in diverse fields, from medical tests to food and agricultural monitoring, proving high accuracy (correlation coefficients over 99%) in both fluorimetric and electrochemical measurements.

Significant tasks of the presented research are the development of multifunctional materials capable both to detect/capture carbon dioxide and to monitor toxic metal ions from waters, thus contributing to maintaining a sustainable and clean environment. The purpose of this work was to synthesize, characterize (NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, Fluorescence, AFM) and exploit the optical and emission properties of a carboxyl-substituted A3B porphyrin, 5-(4-carboxy-phenyl)-10,15,20-tris-(4-methyl-phenyl)–porphyrin, and based on it, to develop novel composite material able to adsorb carbon dioxide. This porphyrin-k-carrageenan composite material can capture CO2 in ambient conditions with a performance of 6.97 mmol/1 g adsorbent. Another aim of our research was to extend this porphyrin- k-carrageenan material’s functionality toward Mn2+ detection from polluted waters and from medical samples, relying on its synergistic partnership with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The plasmonic porphyrin-k-carrageenan-AuNPs material detected Mn2+ in the range of concentration of 4.56 × 10−5 M to 9.39 × 10−5 M (5–11 mg/L), which can be useful for monitoring health of humans exposed to polluted water sources or those who ingested high dietary manganese.

Covering steel surfaces with suitable materials with the capacity to protect against corrosion represents a challenge for both research and industry, as steel, due to its paramount utility, is the most recycled material. This study presents the realization of new sandwich type materials based on 5,10-(4-carboxy-phenyl)-15,20-(4-phenoxy-phenyl)-porphyrin or 5,15-(4-carboxy-phenyl)-10,20-diphenylporphyrin and MnTa2O6 designed to improve corrosion inhibition of steel in aggressive media. The thin films, designed as single- or sandwich-type structures were obtained on carbon steel through the drop-casting technique. Morphological investigations of thin films were carried out by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The inhibition of a steel corrosion process was evaluated in an aggressive environment of 0.1 M HCl by performing electrochemical investigations such as open circuit potential (OCP) and the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The influence of variations in the cathodic Tafel slopes βc and anodic Tafel slopes βa over the corrosion rates was discussed. The best corrosion inhibition efficiency of 91.76% was realized by the steel electrode covered with sandwich-type layers of 5,15-(4-carboxy-phenyl)-10,20-diphenylporphyrin on the bottom layer and MnTa2O6 on the top. The effect of location of the COOH groups in the cis or trans position on the tetrapyrrolic ring was also discussed to understand the corrosion inhibition mechanism.
