Proton Transport in the Gadolinium-Doped Layered Perovskite BaLaInO4

Abstract: Materials capable for use in energy generation have been actively investigated recently. Thermoelectrics, photovoltaics and electronic/ionic conductors are considered as a part of the modern energy system. Layered perovskites have many attractions, as materials with high conductivity. Gadolinium-doped layered perovskite BaLaInO4 was obtained and investigated for the first time. The high values of conductivity were proved. The composition BaLa0.9Gd0.1InO4 demonstrates predominantly protonic transport under wet … Show more

“…However, some features can be highlighted. Firstly, the increase in the conductivity values for the monolayer BaLaInO 4 [ 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 ] and BaNdInO 4 [ 70 , 72 , 73 , 84 , 85 , 86 ] compositions is more significant than for the two-layer BaLa 2 In 2 O 7 [ 74 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 ] and BaNd 2 In 2 O 7 [ 75 , 91 ] compositions (~1.5 vs. ~1. order of magnitude).…”

“…The possibility of isovalent doping was proved for the monolayer and two-layer La-containing composition. The compositions with the doping of the La-sublattice BaLa 0.9 Gd 0.1 InO 4 [ 81 ], BaLa 0.9 Nd 0.1 InO 4 [ 82 ], BaLa 2– x Gd x In 2 O 7 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15 [ 90 ] and In-sublattice BaLaIn 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 4 [ 79 ], BaLaIn 1− x Y x O 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) [ 80 ] were obtained and investigated.…”

“…The authors noted a high efficiency of electrical energy storage and a kW/h cost similar to that required by pumped hydro technologies. Tarasova and collaborators [148,150,151] produced layered perovskites based on rare-earth-doped BaLaInO 4 , using barium carbonate (BaCO 3 ), indium(III) oxide (In 2 O 3 ) and lanthanum(III) oxide (La 2 O 3 ) as primary reactants. The novel proton-conducting materials, neodymium (Nd)-, praseodymium (Pr)-, and gadolinium (Gd)-doped BaLaInO 4 are presented as potential proton-conducting fuel cells.…”

“…The protonic conductivities of these materials, such as BaNdInO 4 [28][29][30][31][32], SrLaInO 4 [33][34][35][36][37], BaNdScO 4 [38], BaLaInO 4 , is realized due to the possibility of dissociative water intercalation into the interlayer space of the layered structure. The monolayer barium-lanthanum indate BaLaInO 4 was described as a nearly pure proton conductor below 400 • C, and an increase in the conductivity values up to 1.5 orders of magnitude caused by heterovalent [39][40][41][42] and isovalent [43][44][45][46] doping was revealed. The two-layer composition BaLa 2 In 2 O 7 of this homologous series AA' n B n O 3n+1 was also described as a protonic conductor [47].…”
