Abstract:A mechanism is proposed whereby a proton gradient along a membrane-spanning a-helix is coupled to small changes in the torsional angles around the a-helix peptide bonds. Small concerted changes in the torsional angles are coupled to a change in the unit twist of the a-helix; a change in the unit twist is coupled to a change in the crossing angle between neighbouring cu-helices; and a change in the crossing angle is coupled to a change in the size and shape of an assembly of a-helices. Following this logical li… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
