Proteomics in pharmaceutical research and development

Abstract: In the 20 years since its inception, the evolution of proteomics in pharmaceutical industry has mirrored the developments within academia and indeed other industries. From initial enthusiasm and subsequent disappointment in global protein expression profiling, pharma research saw the biggest impact when relating to more focused approaches, such as those exploring the interaction between proteins and drugs. Nowadays, proteomics technologies have been integrated in many areas of pharmaceutical R&D, ranging from … Show more

“…Another promising technology developed that has strongly emerged as a powerful tool for the assessment of physiological events is proteomics. Since the introduction of the term proteomics for the first time 20 years ago, proteomic technologies have rapidly evolved and being integrated into several stages in the pharmaceutical research and development [ 26 ]. Proteomic studies focus on the whole population of proteins in a specific cell type, tissue, body fluid, or a whole organism at a given time [ 14 , 27 ].…”

“…It has been estimated that about 35% of human genes undergo alternative splicing which means that the traditional one gene one protein hypothesis should be adjusted to a one gene-many protein model [ 13 , 25 ]. As a consequence, proteomics has a particularly important impact on the discovery of novel drug targets [ 26 ].…”

“…Proteomics complements genomics and transcriptome profiling for gene expression analysis by providing data on the nature of the protein [36]. In particular, proteomics has the ability to generate proteome profiles, and thus a detailed view on overall gene expression on given conditions for microbes in food.…”

“…On the other hand, as high through technology matures, multi-index notation could be observed synchronously. Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics were used in drug research and development [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. These omics technologies could provide multiple data more clearly linked to the drug targets.…”
