Proteomic detection of changes in protein synthesis induced by lanthanum in BGC-823 human gastric cancer cells

Abstract: There is increasing interest in the use of rare earth elements in medicine. However, the biological mechanism of action of this metal ion remains unclear. In the present study, changes in protein synthesis induced by lanthanum in BGC-823 human gastric cancer cells were investigated. The proteins were separated using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and four proteins were significantly affected by lanthanum treatment when compared to an untreated control. Among them, one was down-regulated and… Show more

“…Lanthanum, a light rare earth element, has potential applications in medicine [22] and lanthanum carbonate is used in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia [23, 24]. Rare earth elements are reported to possess a number of physiological effects such as immune regulation [25, 26], anti-virus [27], and anticancer [28-30]. …”

“…Therefore, La 3? -modulated cell proliferation or apoptosis in vitro may be derived from its effect on the inhibition of calcium fluxes which are required for cell cycle regulation (Dai et al 2002;Heffeter et al 2006;Sato et al 1998;Shi and Huang 2005).…”

“…This element has applications in agriculture, industry and medicine (Palasz and Czekaj 2000). There is an increasing interest in its medical use including the therapeutic application of La as an anticancer agent, proposed by Shi and Huang (2005). In the last 25 years, new technologies in metallurgical, optical, and electronic industries increased the application of artificial lanthanide compounds with special physicochemical properties.…”
