“…To summarize, histamine sensitization in mice in response to B. pertussis infection was first described over 50 years ago (606). Subsequently, histamine sensitization was studied by many investigators, but only five studies involving humans were carried out (269,486,501,561,574,576,618,622,625,686,701,801). In a 1948 study, Parfentjev and Goodline found that mice injected intraperitoneally with a pertussis vaccine subsequently became hypersensitive to histamine challenge; 2 mg of histamine had similar lethality in sensitized (previously vaccinated) mice as did 50 mg in unvaccinated mice (606).…”

“…In a review on the treatment of whooping cough, Broomhall and Herxheimer (1 984) suggested that carefully designed clinical trials should be set up in which several forms of treatment, including corticosteroids, could be assessed. If HLT has an important role in the pathogenesis of pertussis, as seems possible (Munoz, 1971;Olson, 1975;Wardlaw and Parton, 1983), the present work suggests that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents also may be worthy of investigation. Further studies on the effects of a range of anti-inflammatory agents on the various pathophysiological activities of B. pertussis toxins in mice could help in the selection of the most likely candidates.…”

“…However, the marked effects seen in laboratory animals after injection of HLT strongly suggest that it has a significant part in the disease process (Munoz, 1971;Olson, 1975;Wardlaw and Parton, 1983). Recently, it was shown that prednisolone, given orally or ip before chal- Received 17 Jun.…”

“…Both can occur in one of several phases (Leslie and Gardner, 1931;Nakase, 1957a;Ezzell et al, 1981) and the importance of using "smooth" or phase-I variants for studies of virulence in laboratory animals has been emphasised. Furthermore, disrupted cell preparations of B. pertussis and B. bronchiseptica contain a heat-labile toxin that is lethal for mice (Munoz, 1971;Morse, 1976). In pigs, Hanada et al (1979) showed that turbinate atrophy could be produced by the repeated intranasal instillation of cell-free material prepared from a phase4 strain of B. bronchiseptica by ultrasonic disintegration.…”
