Protective efficacy of vaccines against bovine dermatophytosis after double and single vaccination

Abstract: The protective efficacy of two Czech vaccines against bovine Trichophyton verrucosum infection after double vaccination of calves in prophylactic doses, with an interval of 13 days between vaccination and revaccination, was very good. When these preparations were applied in a double dose only once, less protective effect was produced. The use of 0.5% aluminium hydroxide to dilute the vaccines had no influence on the effect of single vaccination.

“…Protection of animals was sufficient in case of double vaccination (i.e. vaccination and revaccination) while single vaccination was less effective 17 . Sufficient protective efficacy of the live T. verrucosum vaccine in calves being vaccinated twice has been also confirmed in our study.…”

“…vaccination and revaccination) while single vaccination was less effective. 17 Sufficient protective efficacy of the live T. verrucosum vaccine in calves being vaccinated twice has been also confirmed in our study. In contrast to other authors 2,18 who used the Russian LTF-130 vaccine, the development of postvaccination immunity was accompanied not only with crust formation at the vaccination sites after vaccination with Czech vaccine.…”

“…But one needs a booster vaccination for life‐long protection and the efficiency is variable. In some herds, some of the calves develop ringworm in spite of early vaccination, mostly in the period between two injections (Naess & Sandvik, 1981; Gudding & Lund, 1995; Kielstein et al ., 1998; Rybnikar et al ., 1998).…”

“…Problems concerning the immunity rise after a single administration of the vaccine against trichophytosis in cattle were dealt with in a previous study (Rybnikář et al 1998). The Trichoben vaccine injected once in a double prophylactic dose yielded satisfactory immunity only in 50% of calves.…”

“…Live vaccines yielded the best results under both experimental and practical conditions (Gudding and Lund 1995). It was found that a single dose of these vaccines is not sufficient for the development of satisfactory immunity against trichophytosis; double administration of these biopreparations has to be done to obtain convenient vaccine efficacy (Rybnikář et al 1998). The interval between vaccination and re-vaccination is mostly from 10 to 14 days in registered antimycotic vaccines.…”
