Protective effects of conventional and colon-targeted lycopene and linalool on ulcerative colitis induced by acetic acid in rats

Abstract: As expected, sulfasalazine was effective on all parameters analyzed, but the colon-targeted pretreatments were more effective from sulfasalazine on some parameters. Therefore, colon-targeted plant-derived therapies might be alternative approaches to provide protection against UC, which deserves to be investigated further.

“…Moreover, SSZ was associated with significantly lower inflammation markers (TNF-α, IL-6, ESR, and MPO) and tissue damage. These effects of SSZ have also been previously reported in similar experimental models [46,53,56,61,62,63].…”

“…Moreover, although the protection imparted by Spirulina platensis was compared to a widely-accepted clinically-used treatment in IBD, SSZ, one important limitation of the current study is the lack of direct evidence to show the role of carotenoids, and possibly other ingredients, in the protective effects displayed by the HA extracts. However, clinical and experimental evidence by others has highlighted the importance of carotenoids in the management of gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions, including UC [19,21,28,29,61,68].…”

“…MFE was freshly prepared as a solution in distilled water (20 mg/ml). Sulfasalazine (Sulfa) was used as the reference drug, and the dose was obtained from the study of Tekeli et al (2018). Sulfa was dissolved in normal saline 0.9% to a final concentration of 10 mg/ml.…”

“…Oxidative injure has been established to have significant serious effects on IBD pathogenesis (Sepehrimanesha et al, 2018). Acetic acid produced colon ulcer through different mechanisms including generation of oxidative stress, initiation of lipid peroxidation, inflammation, infiltration of neutrophils and induction of apoptosis (Tekeli et al, 2018).…”
